Specification of Aluminium in Welding

Welding procedure specification abounds in plenty and they vary with each varying metal. On the basis of their properties, their works and structural welding codes vary. In this article, I will give a detailed analysis of the metal called Aluminium. Each industry uses different types of metals depending upon the nature of their work. The moment you think of a particular metal, it does give you some hint of the finished products made by using that metal.

Let’s practice some exercise regarding Aluminium. The first thing any sensible person would think hearing about Aluminium will be ships. With their increasing usage, their number in various industries has increased quite a bit. In military, more and more hull ships are in demand for their personal as well as commercial purposes. There is an appropriate question as to why especially Aluminium has been used for the military purposes? The answer is that it is lighter, saves fuel and increases speed. This makes it appropriate for such industries which require quite a lot of speed.

Each metal has their own welding code which makes only for the technical persons. The structural welding code for aluminium is AWS D1.2. It ensures weld joint design and limitations. It also tells you how welders are to be certified for welding Aluminium. It is only after you become a CWI Inspector that you can perform all such activities.

There are several processes which are to be used to weld Aluminium structures like GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc), and VPPAW (Variable polarity Plasma). Amongst all these, the middle one i.e. GMAW is the main welding process for shipbuilding. In addition to that, friction stir is researched deeper and deeper.

For the Aluminium structures, procedures need to be qualified as well. Aluminium loses strength while the welding procedures can affect the finished product. You have to be careful while using the heat input. One need not use very much heat to limit porosity and low heat can change the strength and physical properties of the alloy.

Unlike carbon steel, Aluminium loses its hardness and strength when it gets hot enough. The most important point is that AWS D1.2 requires the use of qualified welding procedures to take care that minimal tensile properties are met in the heat affected zone.

All the above mentioned welding procedure specification needs to be followed while you are dealing with such sensitive issues. Make sure that no hazardous things happen within your workings.
